Prof. Luís Costa is Professor of Medicine at the Lisbon Medical School - University of Lisbon where he coordinates the Oncobiology subject which is new learning unit that aims to teach the understanding of clinical oncology through molecular medicine.
He is also the Head of Oncology Department at Hospital de Santa Maria in Lisbon since 2005, and was appointed in 2015 as the Director of the Clinical Research Center at Lisbon Medical Academic Center. Since 2007, he is the Head of the Clinical Translational Oncology Research Unit at Instituto de Medicina Molecular (iMM).
He is involved in multiple phase 1, 2 and phase 3 clinical trials in breast cancer and other solid tumors, and his research interests have long centered on the area of bone metastases. In recent years, his research has focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of tumor progression at metastatic sites using bone metastases as a paradigm.
Prof. Costa also acts as an expert for grant reviews at the European Research Council, Cancer Research UK, the French National Cancer Institute, and the Netherlands Cancer Institute.
Prof. Costa is Academic Editor for Plos One and Journal of Bone Oncology. He has also published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles and other publications appearing in such journals as Journal of Clinical Oncology, European Journal of Cancer, The Breast, The Oncologist, Annals of Oncology, Nature Clinical Practice Oncology, and The Lancet Oncology.
